survive

“And that right there is the purpose of cliffhangers. Why give it an end, even if only for once book, if there’s so much left?” He smirked at that, giving her a light shrug. In all honesty, he was just as mad at cliffhangers as she was but he was just as disappointed whenever he reached the end of a good story. He’d even gotten to the point where he simply left the last few pages unread, just for imagination’s sake.

But stories and books weren’t his main concern for the moment. Surviving was. He still had in mind that he might just find whoever managed things around there and get to try and make him keep him there, at least for a while longer.

But he didn’t want to cause Ellie any more trouble. Bringing a stranger with her was probably frowned upon enough as it is, brining a clingy, seemingly nuts stranger with her would only be heaps worse.

“I know. I’ll be out by tonight..” …and ding, two months later you will find my body on a hunting trip, probably clinging to a tree or something… , he added in thought. “I’ll uh.. I’ll be fine, I guess. For a while. A little while. Real little..“

Ellie huffed, green eyes falling to the wooden floor beneath. He made a small part of her feel terrible to just kick him out. If she was in his shoes right now then Ellie would be absolutely terrified. Being alone, left out in the wilderness with no one to turn to; that would be her worst nightmare.

"Wha-…What if I talked to the guy who runs things ‘round 'ere, huh? I could get ya’ a little more time… but you’d 'ave t'pull ya’ weight. You can’t go 'round bein’ a lazy ass.” It was a small offer, seeing he had helped her put down two Runners without being asked. His clothes were practically falling apart, anyway.

“Ya’ can fight, they like people who are good with guns.” She added, her arms still tightly wrapped around her legs. If you could fight, then that meant that you could defend yourself and weren’t completely useless. It always worked in people’s favors.

“Don’t mention any of that space stuff, though. If I think ya’ weird, they’ll think ya’ fuckin’ nuts. They won’t let ya’ stay.” Ellie had seen people thrown out of the community at times; she knew what you had to do to stay, even if it was just for a little while. Pulling your weight was the most important, and you also needed to be some what sane. A man who claimed to have crashed from outer space would not go down well with Tommy.

A half smile tugged at her lips as the male thanked her once more. Alright, maybe this wasn’t as bad as she thought....

He might not have been completely ‘through’ with this whole thing, but he did feel somewhat relieved that she’d try to...
