Reed stopped cold in his tracks when he noticed the break-in. Just what he needed. First the infection, then low on food, now some desperate idiot decided to loot his only form of protection.

“This better be fucking quick,” He muttered under his breath, gripping his fingers around the handgun that was conveniently strapped to his belt. Reed set his catch outside the shop and tried hiding it behind a berry bush. It was a lame attempt, but he couldn’t afford loosing anything else.

Upon entering the shop, he couldn’t find anything. A couple of chairs were overturned and most of the cupboards were open, but he could hear something else. Someone else. Reed brought up his gun and aimed at the island counter. He could hear someone breathing. His thin lips curved into a smirk, “Gotcha.“

The quick bullet ricocheted off the metal and hit the wooden floor of the shop. He quickly took cover, silently waiting for the perpetrator to make the next move.

‘Shit,' Ellie thought to herself as she heard the bullet ricochet off the metal surface. If they were already aware of her presence, well, a switchblade wasn’t going to do much damage. Sliding the blade back into her front pocket, Ellie then pulled out her pistol; it was times like this when she wished she carried her rifle with her.

Green eyes searched frantically for some sort of escape route. Glancing to her left, Ellie spotted a small window, shards of glass sticking up from the bottom. It didn’t exactly look safe, but it was her only way out of this.

With her hand against the cool metal counter for support, Ellie stayed crouched behind the only protection she had, trying to listen in for any sounds that could belong to the unexpected visitor. Glancing up at the counter top, Ellie spotted a glass bottle lying sideways on the surface. As quietly as she could, the young woman quickly snatched the bottle from the counter. She only had one shot, but it could have been her way out of this.

In the midst of eerie silence, Ellie then took the only chance she had. When the time was right, she peaked up from the top of the counter, throwing the bottle so it hit the wall on the other side of the shop. Without wasting another second, Ellie moved towards her escape, still crouched all the way. With both hands, she pushed herself out of the window; wincing as broken glass pierced through her hands.
